Tiivistelmä
Abstract

This research topic was assigned by the Biopooli project team of the Bioinstutute - Jyvaskyla University of Applied Sciences. The project team is tasked with designing and developing processes for a new bi-omass terminal specifically to handle wood chips for energy genera-tion, which would be built in Central Finland.
The task and primary objective of this research was to gather infor-mation on the latest and efficient processes involved when using a centralized system in biomass supply chain. The chosen geographical area for this study was Sweden and Germany. Wood chips supply chain activities like raw material harvesting, transportation, communi-tion processes, storing, drying and other terminal operations amongst others was looked into.
This study was conducted using the desktop research method. Sources of information for the research were academic publications, official government agency publications, and other academic research journals of interest. The theoretical framework of this study also involved a strong background in supply chain management, and as such, text-books were also used.
The results obtained in this study found out that there were a lot of similarities of forest wood chip supply chain practices in Sweden and Finland. Available Swedish literature also gave useful insight on gen-eral trends of centralized systems in the country of Sweden. For Ger-many, results mainly showed the effectiveness of their technology as regards to harvesting, drying and their storing processes.
This report drew conclusions from the pros and cons of gathered in-formation and made useful recommendations to the Biopooli project team.
