This thesis examines how the picture plan actualizes in the graduation film I Ensamhetens Stad by using two methods. The first is based on understanding why specific scenes are included in the script by analysing the script with the dramaturgical structure and thereafter make a scene breakdown, where the most important in each scene is analysed. The second method is based on going to locations with stand-ins and practise through the scenery and take still images with the idea to convey the story in the best way possible.
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how picture planning helps a cinematographer when shooting a fictional film and observe whether and for what reasons the film's images are different from those in the picture planning. When compared to the film it can be said that most of the pictures are similar to those in the planning process and if they are not, it depends on the adaptation of the scene or no access to the location in advance.
The results of this thesis show that the planning according to these two methods work to some degree. You cannot hang on to the planning that has been done and hope that the actors will perform as wanted. As a cinematographer you have to be flexible and open to spontaneity and adapt to the actors and capture their energy in their way. You should plan accordingly so that you know exactly what you are looking for in the specific scene and only then can you let go of your plan and on the set feel free in your visual language.
