Maatilojen kokemuksia susitilanteesta Suomessa

Susien aiheuttamat tuotantoeläimiin kohdistuvat vahingot ovat lisääntyneet viime vuosina. Kasvanutta susikantaa on vuosina 2015 ja 2016 metsästetty kannanhoidollisesti maa- ja metsätalousministeriön vuonna 2015 julkaiseman suden kannanhoitosuunnitelman mukaisesti.

Tutkimuksen tavoitteena oli tutkia maatilojen kokemuksia susitilanteesta. Tutkimus toteutettiin pääosin kvalitatiivisena. Aineiston keruuta varten luotiin kyselylomake, joka koostui avoimista ja strukturoiduista kysymyksistä. Maatilojen osallistuminen ei edellyttänyt tapahtuneita susivahinkoja, vaan tarkoitus oli käsitellä kaikenlaisia susiin liittyviä kokemuksia. Kyselyn aihealueet liittyivät esimerkiksi susien lukumäärään, pelkoihin, korvauspolitiikkaan ja viranomaistoimintaan.

Tutkimukseen osallistui yhdeksän maatilaa eri puolilta Suomea. Kaikilla kyselyyn osallistuneilla maatiloilla oli ainakin jälkihavaintoja susista. Kaikille kyselyyn osallistuneille lammastiloille oli tapahtunut susivahinko. Suurimmalle osalle tiloista koitui susista haittaa. Vastauksista voitiin todeta, että erityisesti häiriösusien eliminoiminen ja viranomaistoiminta tulisi olla nopeampaa ja tehokkaampaa. Susivahingoista maksettuja korvauksia pidettiin myös liian pieninä ja korvausprosessia liian hitaana. Kannanhoidollista metsästystä pidettiin hyvänä asiana ja useissa vastauksissa toistui kannanhoidollisen metsästyksen merkitys susitilanteen ratkaisemiseksi.

Abstract

The damage caused to farm animals by wolves has grown in the last few years. The increased wolf population has been hunted in 2015–2016 according to the wolf population management plan (2015) presented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry.

The aim of this study was to examine the experiences with wolves that farmers are facing in Finland nowadays. The research was completed as a survey. A questionnaire was used to collect the data. The questionnaire included both multiple choice questions and open- end questions. It was not required to have experienced damage caused by wolves in order to participate in the research. The topics on the questionnaire were about wolf population, fear, wolf damage compensations and the actions of authorities.

Nine farms around Finland participated in this research. All the farms had at least seen wolf prints on the ground nearby the farm. All the sheep farms that participated had sheep damages caused by wolves. The vast majority of the farms participated in this research experienced some kind of harm caused by wolves. It can be concluded from the survey that the elimination of wolves causing damage should be faster and more effective. The actions of the authorities should also be more effective. The compensation to cover damage was considered too low and the compensation process was considered too slow. Multiple comments on the survey conclude that the hunting process according to the wolf population management plan presented by the Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry is a good improvement and can be used in the future as well.
