Eri palveluntarjoajien IoT-alustojen vertailu : IBM Watson IoT & Bluemix, Microsoft Azure IoT Hub ja PTC Thingworx

Abstract

Tämän opinnäytetyön toimeksiantajana oli Hämeen ammattikorkeakoulun Älykkäät palvelut –tutkimusyksikkö. Sen tavoitteena on kehittää digitalisuuden käyttöönottoa palveluliiketoiminnassa ja kehittää yhteistoimintaverkoston kanssa kohdennettuja kehitysaktiviteetteja aluekehityksen tarpeisiin.

Opinnäytetyön tavoitteena oli verrata kolmen eri palveluntarjoajan IoT-alustaa niiden liitettävyyden, käyttöliittymän, laitehallinnan, tietokantojen sekä prosessoinnin ja toimintojen hallinnan kautta. Vertailtavat alustat olivat IBM:n Watson IoT & Bluemix, Microsoftin Azure IoT Hub ja PTC:n Thingworx. Näiden tulosten pohjalta oli tarkoitus luoda vertailumatriisi, jossa erot havaitaan. Tätä vertailumatriisia voitaisiin käyttää myös muiden alustojen vertailussa.

Teoriatietoa kerättiin useista eri tutkimusraporteista ja internetlähteistä. Työn käytännön osuudessa alustojen eroja vertailtiin pääosin käyttämällä alustoja itse ja tutkimalla erilaisia käyttäjäkokemuksia.

Opinnäytetyön päätulos oli se, että Microsoftin Azure IoT Hub oli perusominaisuuksiltaan vertailluista alustoista paras. Huomionarvoista oli kuitenkin se, että erot kahteen muuhun alustaan olivat suhteellisen pienet. Kokonaisuuteen vaikuttavat myös monet muut asiat, esimerkiksi hinnoittelu. Alustoiden valinnassa tulee aina kuitenkin ottaa huomioon tarpeet, joita varten ne hankitaan.

This Bachelor’s thesis was commissioned by the research unit Smart Services of Häme University of Applied Sciences. The goal of the unit is to develop the use of digitalization in the service business and to produce a network of co-operation within applied research and different regional activities for the needs of the region.

The purpose of the thesis was to compare different service providers IoT Platforms by their basic features. These features are connectivity, user interface, device management, database and processing and action management. Platforms that were compared were IBM Watson IoT & Bluemix, Microsoft Azure IoT Hub and PTC Thingworx. When the results were clear a comparison matrix was created showcasing the results. This comparison matrix could also be used to compare different platforms.

The theoretical information was gathered from different research reports and internet sources. The practical part was achieved by using the different platforms and studying different user experiences of these platforms.

The main result of this thesis was that Microsoft’s Azure IoT Hub was the best platform by its basic features. However, it’s worth noticing that the differences to the other two platforms were relatively small. The big picture is also affected by many other things, pricing for example. When choosing a platform, the different needs should always be considered.
