This work deals with the woman’s and the man's experiences of postpartum depression. The work will also answer the question what are the causes for the onset of depression for women and men, how they experience the depression and the depressions affects on their mutual relationship. The purpose of this work is to increase awareness of postpar-tum depression in men and women, alleviating the suffering caused by the disease and get a good overall picture of how postpartum depression affects the quality of the cou-ple’s relationship. Challenges for the study is that the field is wide but the number of scientific researches carried out on postpartum depression effects on terminating the couple’s relationship, or the man's postpartum depression are few. In the study have been included only how postpartum depression effects on the man and the woman, not the family, the child or the children. As material for the study were eleven scientific ar-ticles and twelve articles as background material selected. The method for the study is a qualitative manifest content analysis. Research logic is an inductive logic and the per-spective of the work is the women’s and men’s. As the theoretical framework was cho-sen Katie Eriksson's theory of the suffering of the human being. The outcome in this research suggests that women are more often diagnosed with postpartum depression in an earlier stage than men, while the man's onset of postpartum depression is affected by the woman's illness. For both women and men is the support they receive from each other has the most important impact for the onset of postpartum depression. Dissatisfac-tion within the couple’s relationship and the lack of communication between the man and the woman increases the risk for the onset of postpartum depression. Both the man and the woman feel that they drift apart and are not able to give each other the support that they expect.
