Abstract
The purpose of this article is to form a flexible workshop-concept, a sort of short course in improvisation in music, based on theoretical starting points and paradigms. The workshop-concept is made for group teaching, but some of the exercises can also be used for individual teaching. The article covers teaching methods for improving the capacity to improvise, as well as improvisational activities with the purpose to train and enhance other types of musical activity and teaching.
First, I have with the help of several specialists tried to look at improvisation from three perspectives, the philosophical, the practical and the pedagogical. These attempts have resulted in an interdisciplinary discussion between different types of approaches. Among the creators that are mentioned in the sources there are teachers, musicians, psychologists and neurologists among others.
The workshop-concept is based on a few maxims that have emerged from this discussion. I clarify the connection between the workshops and the theoretical writings in chapter three. I’ve had very good response to the workshop-concept, but it would be difficult for me to specify if that’s due to the concept or the execution of it. Thus, this is not an inquiry into whether or not the concepts work but only a presentation and a subjective evaluation of them. I hope they will be useful in the future.
