Opinnäytteiden julkaiseminen PDF-formaatissa

Abstract

Tutkimus koostui vertailusta eri PDF-julkaisujen tuottamiseen ja muokkaamiseen tarkoitettujen tietokoneohjelmien välillä sekä käyttäjän ohjeistuksen laatimisesta vertailun perusteella sopivimmille ohjelmille. Opinnäyte tehtiin Turun ammattikorkeakoulun kirjaston Open Access -opinnäytetyötietokantaprojektille. Projektin tarkoituksena on luoda opinnäytetyötietokanta Turun ammattikorkeakoulussa valmistuvien opinnäytetöiden elektronisten kokotekstien tallennusta, säilytystä ja käyttöä varten, testata opinnäytetöiden verkkojulkaisemista sekä suunnitella opinnäytetyöprosessiin mahdollisesti tulevia muutoksia.

Portable Document Format eli PDF on Adobe Systems Inc:n kehittämä käyttöjärjestelmästä riippumaton, helposti siirrettävä tiedostomuoto, joka pohjautuu Adoben kehittämään laitteistoriippumattomaan PostScript -sivunohjauskieleen. Sitä hyödynnetään pääasiassa dokumenttien sähköisessä julkaisemisessa ja arkistoimisessa, tulostamisessa sekä painotöiden valmistamisessa. Siirrettäessä PDF-dokumenttia mukana siirtyvät myös julkaisussa käytetyt grafiikat, kirjasimet sekä taitto. Tämän ansiosta julkaisun ulkoasu pysyy muuttumattomana käyttöjärjestelmästä riippumatta.

Tavoitteena oli selvittää, mitkä PDF-julkaisujen tuottamiseen ja muokkaamiseen tarkoitetuista ohjelmista soveltuvat kustannusten, käytettävyyden ja muiden ominaisuuksien perusteella parhaiten opinnäytetöiden julkaisemiseksi elektronisesti Turun ammattikorkeakoulun kirjaston opinnäytetyötietokannassa. Vertailtavat ohjelmat valittiin opinnäytteen tekijän omassa koulutustyössään ja harrastustoiminnassaan hankkimien kokemusten perusteella sekä tutkimalla aiheeseen liittyvien verkkoyhteisöjen sekä ammattilehtien sisältöjä.

Tutkimuksen teoreettisessa osuudessa käsiteltiin PDF-formaatin ominaisuuksiin sekä eri PDF-standardeja.

Tutkimuksen perusteella valittiin yksi kaupallinen ja yksi ilmainen ohjelma ohjeistamista varten. Lisäksi toimeksiantajan toivomuksesta laadittiin ohjeistus yhteen Microsoft Office 2007-apuohjelmaan.

The study consists of comparisons between computer programs developed to produce and modify PDF publications, and of development of user instructions for the most suitable programs. The thesis was made for the Open Access thesis database project of the Turku University of Applied Sciences Library. The goal of the project was to create a database for the saving, storing and using of full-text theses of the Turku University of Applied Sciences, to test the publishing of the theses in the net, and to plan possible future changes in the thesis process.

Portable Document Format, that is PDF, is a file format developed by Adobe Systems Inc. It is independent of the operating system and easily transferable. It is based on Postscript which is a page description language developed by Adobe. Postscript is independent of the equipment used. PDF is mainly utilized in the publication, archiving and printing of electronic documents and in the production of printed works. When a PDF-document is transferred the graphics, fonts and layout are also transferred. Because of this, the outlook of the publication remains intact, independent of the operating system used.

The aim of the study was to explore which programs developed to produce and modify PDF publications are best suited for the publishing of theses in the thesis database of the Turku University of Applied Sciences in terms of costs, usability and other aspects. The programs compared in the study were chosen on the basis of the experiences the author of the present thesis has gathered in his own education and hobbies, the author’s participation in the activities of net communities related to the topic, and on studying professional magazines.

The properties of the PDF format are examined in the theoretical part of the study. It also contains a description of PDF standards.

The comparison of the computer programs lead to the selection of one commercial and one free program for which user instructions were developed. Instructions for users were also developed for one Microsoft Office 2007 add-in
