The aim of this thesis is to study mothers’ experiences of support during the process becoming a mother. In the study the writer wants to emphasize mothers’ experiences of different kinds of support, prenatal yoga included, as preparation before childbirth, and tools that have been helpful for her to get a positive experience of childbirth. The study tries to get answers on following questions; How did the mothers experience the support they got during pregnancy? How did the mothers experience the prenatal yoga as support and preparation before giving birth? As data collecting method, semi-structured interviews have been made with five separate mothers. The material has been analyzed using phenomenological analysis method. The study is qualitative.
The result shows that the mothers have been grateful for the support they have got. Also, their earlier experiences have influenced their needs of support and their choice of prenatal yoga as preparation. They experienced that the pregnancy yoga was a good preparation before the childbirth that gave them tools to help them get true the pain during labor. Prenatal yoga also gave them guidance and helped them mentally through the progress of birth and helped them find their inner strength. The women felt comfortable and at ease after the yoga class. They also felt that the class was relaxing and had given primetime for themselves. The fellowship in the group, they thought, was supportive and good.
