Neck pain is one of the most common reasons to go to a physiotherapist. Researchers have started to investigate if the reason for neck pain lies within the motor control of the cervical muscles. The aim of this systematic review is to put together research results about motor control in the cervical muscles. The pertinant questions are of how the motor control is described among persons with neck pain and the asymptomatic; and what kind of physiotherapy exercise the researchers recommend. In all, 15 studies were included that were published after the year 2000 and investigated the activity of the cervical muscles among persons with neck pain or between persons with neck pain and asymptomatic. The results indicate that motor control is changed among persons with neck pain and especially the superficial cervical muscles are overactive, while the deep muscles are weakened and are not activated correctly. The researchers recommend that the physiotherapy exercise should be concentrated on specific, low intensity exercise of the deep cervical flexor muscles, preferably trained through functional tasks. Posture correction is also recommended because a correct posture activates the deep stabilizing muscles.
