In Finland, an extensive social welfare and healthcare reform is underway, which will change all social services that we today receive from the municipalities. Within the framework of social services, there is family work. The purpose of this thesis is to map out the effects of home visits in order to illustrate their function within family work. This thesis was ordered by the town of Raseborg (Finland). The question formulation for this study is: Which advantages and disadvantages are there to home visits as an outreach method in preventive family work? This general literature study examines 15 scientific articles. The articles included in this general literature study were written in English and published between 2010 –2017. The selected articles use home visits as their method, and the effects of home visits are described. The results indicate that home visits contribute to a strengthened parenthood, the wellbeing of children and financial gain for the society. The expression strengthened parenthood encompasses having a more positive attitude towards parenting, feeling the value of having someone to talk to as well as having the courage to ask for and to receive help. For the children, a strengthened parenthood contributes to less behavioral problems, a safe development and a more secure home environment. Early identification of families with a need of support helps to strengthen the parenthood, which ensures a safe and strengthened development for the children. Early home visits prevent the need of support in families in need of extra support to develop into a bigger problem. Therefore, the preventive efforts will contribute to a better family life, and thus the effects of home visits not only favor the whole family, but also the society in general.
