Tiivistelmä
Thesis presents plastic recycling research assigned by Mustankorkea Ltd. The research was executed in close cooperation between Mustankorkea Ltd and Jyväskylän Vuokra-asunnot Oy JVA. The research is a part of larger project entity called Circwaste, which is an EU-wide project promoting circular economy and aiming to improve resource efficiency and material flow management.
The research was conducted in Jyväskylä and its objective was to find out citizens’ interest in household packaging plastic recycling. The research was implemented as an experiment where tenants of five apartment houses located all around Jyväskylä were given the opportunity to dispose their packaging plastics as separately collected waste. The experiment took four weeks and after it was finished a survey of tenants’ experiences was conducted.
Based on the results of the research Mustankorkea Ltd decided whether to start separate collecting of household plastic waste permanently from apartment houses or not. Unfortunately the results were such poor that collecting separate plastic waste isn’t environmentally nor economically wise. The results showed that despite of opinions and general atmosphere being positive towards plastic recycling citizens still don’t recycle.
In addition to the research thesis also presents briefly circular economy since it is the driving force in Circwaste. Other main topics covered in the thesis are waste manage-ment statistics and waste legislation. Both are studied from plastic waste point of view.
