Drum editing has become easier than before because of the Pro Tools system and its plug-ins. This is one of the reasons that Pro Tools is used in the majority of professional recording studios today. The research questions in this study considers the editing process and its demands on the recording process, troubleshooting and the consequences of drum editing in the rock and metal genre. This degree thesis is limited to the rock and metal genre where drums are often heavily edited or even overproduced because of the technical demands on the drummer. The Beat Detective application is often used for quantisizing, and the plug-in SoundReplacer is used for sampling the drums. In this degree thesis one will find answers on how and why they are used and on usual problems when using them. Alternative methods are also briefly discussed. My research methods include interviewing professional studio engineers, reading literature about the recording and editing process and own experiences in recording and editing drums. The consequences of drum editing is discussed from the musician's, consumer's and studiotechnician's point of view. The aim of the study is to answer questions about the necessity, the motives and the conseqences of overproducing the drums. Money is proved to be a big factor as editing the drums often turn out to be cheaper than spending time in the studio taking multiple drumtakes. The quality of the drummer and the equipment affects on how time is divided between the recording stage and the editing stage.
