The purpose of this thesis is to explore patient satisfaction with nursing care given by foreign nurses. Moreover, the aim of this thesis is to provide information on how foreign nurses can provide and develop quality care. Additionally, this would be a guide for the foreign nurses and patients in achieving excellent care in the future.
A literature review was used by the authors to conduct this study. Scientific articles were chosen from Science Direct (Elsevier), Cumulative Index to Nursing and CINAHL (EBSCOhost), SAGE Premier, Ebrary and OVID. Finnish researches were also included in selected sources. Summary analysis method was used to analyze research findings.
Nursing shortage is one of the global issues that world is going through these days. Nurses from different countries move to developed countries to fulfil nursing vacancies. Foreign nurses need to adapt in new health care system and face challenges such as language and cultural differences, discrimination, inequality, lack of respect and unfamiliar technologies. These factors lead to low patient satisfaction and quality care from foreign nurses. Patients have less trust in foreign nurses and prefer local nurses to be taken care of them as they think that foreign nurses do not have enough skills and knowledge. To be able to achieve high patient satisfaction, foreign educated nurses need support from manager, organization and other social network group. Nurses must boost their language and cultural competencies, provide effective patient education, and maintain professionalism and patient -nurse relationship. Moreover, the foreign nurses have the right to be treated equally, work in a positive environment and given sufficient time to adjust in new environment.
