Piracy Off the Coast of Somalia and Combating it by less Experienced Seafarers

Abstract

The research shows the development of Somalian piracy from past till present. Considerations were taken to indicate root causes and the necessary measures which should be made to address them. In general, our research can be categorized into three parts. In the first part of the research, we took into consideration the history in general and Somalian piracy. We also considered the main resolutions concerning piracy off the coast of Somalia. In addition to that, probable causes are covered with possible explanations.

The second part of our research was the focal point. The aim was to give less experienced seafarers proven pirate combating techniques, principles, and procedures. The study covered the early stages of threat, risk assessment considerations followed by planning then continued with defense measures and actions to be taken in different stages. Finally, we considered the worst outcome of pirate boarding and hostage situations.

The final part of our research was conducted to give us how well piracy has been thought of by our fellow respondents involved in answering the questionnaire. The idea worked out accordingly, which was to analyze the survey result and adjust on the relevant parts that could help to raise their knowledge of the matter. Apart from all the previous measures concerning seafarers pirate combating, we also emphasized the need for international community and relevant governments to eradicate piracy from the region.
