The mental readiness in sports is more and more valued. The stress and possible anxiety of upcoming event might be overwhelming for an athlete and cause a distress and downgrade of performance. In team sports there are more things and individuals to consider. To make the team perform at its best, there must be mentally prepared individuals but also a mentally stable and cohesive team.
Lacrosse is a small and quite new sport in Finland and for that reason there are players from all sorts of backgrounds. Not everyone chosen to be in the National Team has any kind of previous experience in high level competition. Especially for those individuals it is important to mentally prepare. And for the small sport there is quite a lot of schism in between teams and players. National team needs to be working together towards a common goal in a cohesive environment.
The goal of this thesis was to create a manual for the Finland’s Women’s National Team of Lacrosse on how to develop psychological game and mental preparation for the upcoming European Championships that are held in Israel in the summer of 2019. The thesis includes of theoretical framework of basic sport psychology and lacrosse, and an empirical part in which it is explained the reasoning, timing and how the manual will be implemented with the team. The manual is attached as an attachment and for the use of the National Team it is in Finnish.
