Abstract
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate the functionality of mental health services in Kuopio area through the experiences of the clients using these services. The aim of the thesis was to provide information to Midas, the local cooperative network working to improve mental health, which commissioned this study.
The goal of Midas, the commissioning network of the study, is to improve the mental health of mental health clients, mental health rehabilitators and their close family and friends. They are also aiming at increasing openness and approval as well as decreasing the stigma associated with mental health. The network consists of the employees of organizations promoting mental health and those of the psychiatric department of Kuopio University Hospital.
The thesis was conducted as a quantitative study. The quantitative study included open questions, which were analyzed with methods of a qualitative study. The target group consisted of adults living in Kuopio area who had experienced mental health problems. The study material was gathered using the survey method and carried out with Webropol online questionnaire.
We received answers from 94 persons. The majority of the answerers were working adults mainly from Kuopio and Siilinjärvi. Women answered the questionnaire more actively than men (89%). Based on the results of the study, it can be stated that the mental health services were considered insufficient and difficult to find. The attitude towards people having mental health problems was felt to be negative. The best sources of information on mental health services were the professionals of social and health care, the internet as well as close family and friends. The best service and support was offered by friends and members of the family. The challenges of the help and support were related to the availability of the services and to the lack of information and resources. The results of the study can be used to improve mental health services and different forms of support.
A topic for a further study could be to extend the study to the whole region of Northern Savonia in order to develop mental health services and forms of support and to standardize proven practices. A service guide of the mental health services could be made to be delivered by public health care or mental health associations and organizations.
