Suomalaisen ahtausalan sanaston kerääminen ja määrittely

Abstract

Tämän opinnäytetyön tutkimustehtävänä oli suomalaisen ahtausalan sanaston kerääminen ja määrittely työturvallisuuden näkökulmasta. Työn tavoitteena oli kerätyn sanaston kirjaaminen, dokumentointi ja välittäminen eteenpäin toimeksiantajalle, jotta he voivat hyödyntää sitä haluamallaan tavalla. Selviä haasteita sanaston keräämiselle olivat suomen kielen maantieteelliset murteet sekä sanaston kehittyminen. Näiden haasteiden pohjalta muodostui työn tutkimusongelma, jossa haluttiin selvittää termien kirjavuutta ja sen vaikutusta sanaston riittävyyteen työturvallisuuden näkökulmasta.

Työn teoriaosuudessa tarkastellaan ahtausalaa yleisesti sekä työturvallisuuden näkökulmasta. Työturvallisuudessa keskitytään tapaturmien vaaratekijöihin kolmen kantavan teeman avulla, jotka ovat työympäristö, työkoneet ja -välineet sekä työtehtävät. Työturvallisuuteen ja edellä mainittuihin teemoihin liittyy myös vahvasti ahtausalan koulutus sekä uusien työntekijöiden opastus, joita molempia käsitellään lyhyesti teorian valossa. Vertailukohdaksi kerättävälle sanastolle työssä tarkastellaan muita ahtausalan ja merenkulun sanastoja ja sanakirjoja sekä aiheeseen liittyvää yliopistojulkaisua.

Tämä opinnäytetyö on laadullinen tutkimus, jonka aineistonkeruumenetelmiksi valikoituivat puolistrukturoidut teemahaastattelut sekä ryhmähaastattelu. Haastateltavana oli eläköityneitä sekä edelleen työssäkäyviä ahtaajia. Aineistoa kerättiin myös yhteyshenkilön sekä muiden dokumenttien, kuten aikaisempien tutkimusten aineistojen avulla. Uuden ja vanhan sanaston lisäksi käytössä oleville termeille kerättiin vastineet viideltä eri murrealueelta. Empiriaosuudessa kerätylle aineistolle tehtiin sekä aineiston että teorian pohjalta sisällön analyysi.

Lopulliseen sanastoon kerättiin termejä kattavasti kaikista työturvallisuuden kannalta tärkeistä teemoista useilla murteilla. Ahtausalan sanasto on kirjavaa, sillä sanaston kehittyminen tekniikan myötä sekä Suomen maantieteelliset murteet näkyvät termeissä selvästi. Vaikka tekniikka on kehittynyt, uudissanat eivät ole korvanneet vanhoja termejä täysin, eivätkä maantieteelliset murteet vaikuta kaikkiin sanaston termeihin. Tutkimuksessa kerätyn sanaston rakenne sekä laajuus ovat perusteltuja ja riittäviä työturvallisuuden näkökulmasta. Tutkimuskysymyksiin saatiin vastaukset, joten työtä voidaan pitää onnistuneena.

The purpose of this thesis was to collect and define Finnish stevedoring vocabulary from the occupational safety point of view. The objective of this thesis was to record, document and forward the collected vocabulary to the commissioner. Evident challenges for collecting the vocabulary were Finnish geographical dialects and vocabulary changes due to technological development. These challenges worked as a foundation for the research problem which sought to describe the diversity of the terms and its effect on the sufficiency of vocabulary from the perspective of occupational safety.

The theoretical part of this thesis examines the stevedoring industry in general and from the occupational safety perspective. Occupational safety focuses on the hazards of accidents with the help of three main themes: work environment, work equipment and tools and work tasks. Occupational safety and the themes mentioned are also heavily involved in stevedoring training and guidance for new employees. For this reason, they are briefly discussed in the theoretical part of this thesis. As a benchmark for the collected vocabulary, this thesis examines other vocabularies and dictionaries in the stevedoring and shipping industry, as well as a related university publication.

This thesis is a qualitative study, which uses semi-structured interviews and group interviews as data collection methods. The interviewees were retired and still working stevedores. The material was also collected by a contact person and other documents such as previous research materials. In addition to the new and old vocabulary, terms were collected from five different dialect areas. The terms collected in the empirical section were analyzed with content analysis.

For the final vocabulary, the terms were comprehensively collected from all important themes, with several dialects. The stevedoring vocabulary is diverse, as the vocabulary changes and the geographical dialects are clearly visible. Although technology has evolved, the old terms have not been completely replaced by the new, and the geographical dialects do not affect all terms. The structure and scope of the vocabulary collected in this thesis are justified and sufficient from the occupational safety point of view. Answers to the research questions were received, so the work can be considered successful.
