The purpose of this study was to organise the Kunkku relaa [‘Relax, Kuninkaanhaka school’] theme day on wellbeing in cooperation with the personnel of the Kuninkaanhaa school, a public health nurse, and other agents involved in organising the theme day. The authors of this thesis were responsible for planning, implementing and assessing a stress management booth available for the pupils at the school. The stress management booth provided the young people with an informative stress management session that engaged the young people in the activities. The aim was to involve the young people in considering their stress factors and stress management methods by providing the young people with an informative stress management session that utilised a participatory method. As the study progressed, the present authors aimed to learn about the factors inflicting stress in the young people at the upper comprehensive school, the different ways in which the stress manifested, stress prevention, and methods for managing stress from the perspective of a public health nurse.
The theme day on wellbeing was organised in April 2018 at the Kuninkaanhaka upper comprehensive school. The school had a total of 23 theme booths concerning topics closely related to young people’s lives organised by different agents. The stress management booth was set up at the school’s music room located on the school's cellar floor.
The authors of this thesis planned and implemented a stress management booth for the 8th and 9th year pupils of the upper comprehensive school. The aim was to help the young people relax as well as to consider both stress and the ways used to manage it. The pupils visiting the booth were engaged in the activities with a Kahoot survey and interactive discussions. The results of the Kahoot survey revealed that school is the main stressor for young people and that the young people experience stress on a nearly daily basis. According to the results, physical exercise is the most popular method for preventing stress, followed by spending time with friends. Young people talk very little about the stress they encounter and they feel that starting school later in the day would reduce the amount of stress they experience. It was also found that only few young people address these experiences with their teacher or the school health nurse.
