The purpose of this thesis was to design a remote control for the firefighting system for the tugboat that Rolls-Royce Oy Ab uses as research
and development test platform. The remote control had to be able to control the two water monitors of the ship from the remote operation center. Currently the control of water monitors is done from the bridge by either a plc-based touch screen or a portable hand control.
The work was done by first defining the control requirements and the necessary electrical components for the proper operation of the control. Finally, the logic was coded against the requirements and the program was configured to communicate with the remote operation center via CAN messages. Finally, the program was checked to see if it met the requirements defined at the beginning of the work.
The work was completed within the set schedule and the requirements and other work areas were approved and verified as working. The finished work was tested by simulating, because the actual installation of remote control for water monitors occurred on a later date. Based on the simulation tests, the remote control of the water monitors was as desired and will be ready for commissioning in the future.
