Jotta yrityksen toimintaa voidaan johtaa onnistuneesti, tarvitaan päätöksenteon tueksi laskentatoimen tuottamaa taloudellista tietoa.
Tutkimus toteutettiin laadullisena case-tutkimuksena.
Profitability is vital to all business activities – a company’s profits must exceed its costs. The successful management of a company’s business activities means its decision-making must be supported by financial data produced by accounting. The high quality of the data reported to the management and a well-functioning reporting system foster successful steering of business activities. The purpose of this study was to improve the accuracy of the profit margin reporting of the client company with the help of accounting entries. The goal was to calculate a profit or cost item that would allow the profit margin rates produced by the reporting system and accounting to match each other as well as possible.
The research was carried out as a qualitative case study. The research data was collected from electronic accounting and enterprise resource planning systems, and in theme interviews. The theme interviews supported the reaching of the goals of the study, produced more detailed information about the studied phenomenon, and helped familiarize with the data collected from the electronic systems. The theoretical framework covered the topics emerged from the data: profitable business, management accounting, financial reporting, and the use of cost-volume-profit analysis as a tool for profitability management.
As a result of the study, the profit and cost entries missing from the reporting system but taken into account in the company’s accounting were settled. The entries made to the company’s accounting during 2018 were used to calculate the cost-centre-specific profit and cost items missing from the reporting system. The client company can use the results as a basis for improving the accuracy of the profit margin produced by its reporting system, which will allow a more real-time examination of the development of sales and profit margins as well as a more reliable prediction of the results during the current period.
