This development project is related to the cooperate of the Turku University of Applied Sciences and TYKS Women´s clinic, which aims to develop social- and healthcare practical training environments from the point of view of both education and practical training places and to create closer forms of cooperation with working life. The aim of this project was to assess how the student’s innovation competencies developed during the student ward and how the student ward supported the student´s professional identity and skills development through transformative learning.
The development project focused on research, which purpose was assessing a student ward pilot from a midwifery students’ perspective, where the practical training was supposed to better support the student's professional identity, provide the student with better working life skills, and develop the student's innovation competencies.
The student ward was piloted in autumn 2018 for the first time in Finland as a six-week practical training for 20 midwifery students, according to the Swedish student ward model. The practical training take place in the maternity ward of TYKS.
The literature review emphasized the theory of transformative learning and the quantitative and qualitative method was used as the research method. The results were analyzing from the reflective diaries of 19 students and the responses of 17 students to the innovation competence questionnaire before and after the student ward training.
According to the research results, the student ward as a practical training supported the student's professional identity, gave the student working life skills and developed the student's innovation competencies in all areas. The outcome of the project was based on the results of the research, the factors that contributed, and the factors that made it difficult for students to develop professionally during the student ward. The results of the study will be utilized in the development of the student ward model and can be utilized in the planning and development of other similar learning environments in the future.
