Tiivistelmä
The aim of this Bachelor thesis was to investigate the current biogas and bio-methane market situation in Estonia, Greece, Montenegro, Ukraine, Norway and Spain. The literature review was conducted for the Finnish biogas and biomethane technology company Metener Oy. It delivers relevant background information to evaluate the profitability of market expansion into these countries. This work contains numerical information about biogas and biomethane plants, upgrading technologies, CNG vehicles, gas filling stations and price comparison of different energy types, as well as insights into political measures to drive biomethane utilisation in traffic forward.
First, scientific literature was reviewed. Then materials from biogas associations and similar interest groups were searched. Complementary information was gathered by contacting experts from the field via email.
Main findings were that Norway and Spain have the highest amount of biogas plants with 39 operational units, followed by Greece with 35, Ukraine with 25 and Estonia with 17 plants. Montenegro does not produce biogas. Biomethane is produced in Norway, Estonia and Spain. Norway has nine plants and Estonia and Spain have one plant.
Finally, most relevant findings are discussed. Especially, Estonia and Ukraine are positively evaluated regarding political motivation and applied support schemes to support biogas and biomethane production.
