Työ suoritettiin 3D-skannausta lukuun ottamatta Turun ammattikorkeakoulun tiloissa.
The objective of this thesis was to find out how 3D scanning affects the quality of sheet metal products. The purpose of this thesis was to test how 3D scanning can be utilized in a learning environment and what kind of problems would manifest.
The focus of this study was compatibility of the sheet metals and how this whole process would progress. In practice this work was done by bending strips of sheet metal into curves, after which they were 3D-scanned for the making of the tailored counter pieces. The purpose was to examine the gap between the curve and the counter piece. The examination of the gap was a crucial part of this study, because it would affect the quality of the weld between the two pieces.
Apart from the 3D scanning the work was done in the premises of Turku University of Applied Sciences. The work included the bending and cutting of sheet metal. The most challenging part of this work was converting the data from a 3D scan into a suitable cutting path for the tailored piece.
The progress of this work started by preparing the sheet metal plates. First the sheet metal plates were cut into an appropriate shape for bending, afterwards they were bended into the desired curves. The curves were 3D-scanned and by these scans the route for cutting the counter pieces were made.
As a result of this work, the benefits and the challenges of utilizing 3D scanning were discovered. The tailormade counter pieces were almost a perfect fit. The counter pieces that were made without the assistance of 3D scanning did not fit. The results indicate that the curves were not formed as they were planned. The difference between the counter pieces was so significant that it was possible to be determined by the naked eye. Because of this, no further examination was necessary.
