.
Opinnäytetyön tulokset osoittavat, että aistikuntoutuksellisin menetelmin voidaan kehittää autismin kirjon henkilöiden sensorisen integraation taitoja eri osa-alueilla ja näin edistää autismin kirjon henkilöiden oman toiminnan taitoja ja arjen sujuvuutta. Suoranaisia haittavaikutuksia aistikuntoutuksellisten menetelmien käytöstä ei opinnäytetyön tuloksissa havaittu. Kuitenkaan sensorisen integraation terapian yksittäisenä menetelmänä käytettävien apuvälineiden, kuten painoliivien ja terapiapallotuolien käytöstä sellaisenaan, ilman muita sensorisen integraation terapian aistiharjoitteita, ei havaittu olevan hyötyä autismin kirjon henkilöille.
Autismin kirjon henkilön tarkoituksenmukaisempi toiminta ja onnistumiset sosiaalisissa tilanteissa tukevat koko perheen sisäisten suhteiden vahvistumista. Turvallisempi arjessa toiminen vähentää perheen psyykkistä ja fyysistä kuormitusta. Autismin kirjon henkilön lähiyhteisön kuten päiväkodin tai koulun kannalta turvallisempi arjessa toimiminen mahdollistaa yhteisöllisen toiminnan. Koska autismin kirjon henkilö tarvitsee avustamista ja ohjausta läpi koko elämän, kuntoutusta järjestävien organisaatioiden näkökulmasta autismin kirjon henkilön vähentynyt avustamisen ja ohjauksen tarve tarkoittaa pienempiä henkilöstöresursseja palveluissa pitkällä aikavälilla. Yhteiskunnallisesti tarkasteltuna sopeutuvan käytöksen taitojen kehittyminen edistää autismin kirjon henkilöiden yhteiskunnallisen osallisuuden täysimääräisempää toteutumista. Jatkotutkimusaiheina hyödyllistä olisi tutkia sensorisen integraation terapian menetelmien soveltamismahdollisuuksia osaksi aikuisten autismin kirjon henkilöiden autismikuntoutusta, kahdenkeskisen terapiaympäristön ulkopuolelle, esimerkiksi aikuisten autismin kirjon henkilöiden koulu- ja päivätoimintaan.
The underlying causes of behavioral features typical to autism are considered to be abnormalities in brain function and, because of that, abnormalities in the processing and organization of sensory information. Sensory integration refers to the process of analyzing sensory information in the central nervous system. The purpose of the pro-cess is to structure the sensory information for use. The process is carried out uncon-sciously in the brain and directs the person to react to stimuli automatically, effortlessly and appropriately. Abnormalities in the sensory processing make everyday life a chal-lenge. The purpose of this thesis was to collect reviewed information of the theory of sensory integration together with sensory rehabilitation as a part of the comprehensive autism rehabilitation, and with the method of systematic literature review, determine the benefits and disadvantages of sensory integration therapy for people on the autism spectrum.
The results of the thesis show that the different skills needed for the sensory integration process to work more efficiently can be developed with the sensory rehabilitation methods in people on the autism spectrum. These developed skills improve the peoples own abilities to control and direct their performance in the daily tasks and situations in everyday life. No immediate disadvantages were found in the use of sensory integration therapy methods. However, when certain methods such as weighted vests and therapy ball chairs were used on their own, without other sensory exercises, they were found non-beneficial to the people on the autism spectrum.
The increased behavioral knowledge and success in social situations of a person on the autism spectrum will support the strengthening of family-wide relationships. A safer day-to-day behavior also reduces the mental and physical stress of the family. For the close communities of the person on the autism spectrum, such as kindergarten and school, the increased safety in the behavior of the person on the autism spectrum enables the communal activities. Since the person on the autism spectrum needs assistance and guidance throughout life, from the perspective of organizations providing rehabilitation, the reduced need for assistance and guidance means a smaller need for human resources in services in the long term. Socially speaking, the development of adaptive behavior skills contributes to the fuller realization of the social inclusion of persons on the autism spectrum. As further research topics, it would be useful to explore the possibilities of modifying sensory integration therapy methods in a way that they could be implemented in other types of environments than one-to-one therapy sessions, for example, in schools and rehabilitation centers for people on the autism spectrum with all age groups.
