Finland’s population is aging at a record pace, so in the future, the social wellfare need for services increases. At this moment there is no knowledge of who will be taking care of aging population which is in need of these services. Social and healthcare workers are already working at their limits so healthcare needs to be changed to manage the aging population. Traditionally, healthcare has been connecting with people and will continue to be so in the future even when technology is facilitating daily work.
The goal of thesis was to find out how robotics, AI and digitalisation can be used to benefit especially in eldercare. Additionally, the thesis examines the history, the present situation and the future of robotics. It is important to note that social and healthcare students and workers are they ready to face thise change. The investigation was carried out with the help interviews.
A theme interview was carried out as a group interview for the nursing staff in an elderly housing unit. Group interview was attended by 14 members of the nursing staff. The respondents to the questionnaire were 87 students of Bachelor of Social Services.
The result of this thesis was the social and healthcare professionals and students points of view on topic. Many thoughts were that human contact cannot be replaced because work includes much humanity and for some elderly, the nursing staff is their only outside connection. In conclusion nursing staff and students are ready to adopt technology as a helping tool so that there is more time to connect with the elderly.
