Role of accelerator programs in early-stage startups : Case study Startup Journey

Abstract

In order to solve issues of the contemporary world and attend human needs, the number of new startups has grown exponentially. However, as they increase numerically, earlier a looking for development support seems to be required. Offering a set of specific features, accelerator programs are an incubation mechanism that has been grabbing the attention in the business environment. Despite its progressive growth, its role remains still unclear. The current thesis aims to explore the effectiveness, the valuable aspects provided to startups and how they accelerate their learning. The data was collected through semi-structured interviews with ten participants of Startup Journey, accelerator program from the Entrepreneurship Society Boost Turku. The result shows evidence that taking part in the program culminated in a gain of knowledge of the venturers, as well as they felt accelerated afterward. Still, the sample emphasizes some crucial aspects provided by the programs to help their development. Lastly, was found two different settings of how accelerators accelerate the learning in such a short time. First, learning is accelerated by the mentors and the second, learning by cohort teams. Furthermore, this thesis aims to contribute to the research about accelerator programs.

Nykymaailman ongelmien ratkaisemiseksi ja ihmisten tarpeiden huomioon ottamiseksi uusien startupien määrä on kasvanut eksponentiaalisesti. Startupien lisääntyessä lukumääräisesti näyttää siltä, että myös niiden kehitystä tukevien toimien tarve kasvaa. Kiihdytysohjelmat tarjoavat räätälöityjä sisältöjä ja ovat inkubaatiomekanismi, joka on kiinnittänyt huomiota liiketoimintaympäristössä. Kiihdytysohjelmien rooli on kuitenkin edelleen epäselvä. Tämän opinnäytteen tavoitteena on tutkia kiihdytysohjelmien tehokkuutta sekä niiden startupeille tuottamaa arvoa ja oppimisen nopeuttamista. Tutkimuksen aineisto kerättiin puolistrukturoituina haastatteluina, joissa haastateltiin kymmentä Startup Journey -ohjelman osallistujaa. Startup Journey on yrittäjyysyhteisö Boost Turun kiihdytysohjelma. Tutkimuksen tuloksista ilmenee, että ohjelmaan osallistuminen lisäsi toimijoiden osaamista sekä nopeutti toimintaa jälkeenpäin. Tuloksissa korostuvat muutamat kehityksen edistämisen kannalta keskeiset näkökulmat. Lisäksi tuloksista ilmenee kaksi erilaista asetelmaa siitä, miten kiihdytysohjelmat lisäävät oppimista lyhyessä ajassa: sekä mentorit että vertaisryhmät nopeuttavat oppimista. Tämän opinnäytetyön tavoitteena on edistää kiihdytysohjelmien tutkimusta.
