In this Bachelor’s Thesis I reflect on how an opera student can improve his/her performing skills. I talk about the importance of physical expression when singing opera music and I have collected some instructions that have proved to be useful when directing opera students. The singer should be able to convey the story written into the music to the audience but without any physical expression the performance might not convince the audience. The importance of physical expression, especially in opera music, has to be taken into consideration because the piece is always composed to some character and it should express such a character.
The main focus in singing lessons is usually in the singing technique and it might not be until the first opera production when the student gets a chance to practice his/her physical expression properly. I think that the importance of performing should be considered and practiced already during the music rehearsals for many reasons: usually when singers physical expression improves, it also effects to his/her singing and affects favourably the whole performance. In addition, nowadays singers are required to be more versatile as performers.
Opera students are often very aware of what the text in their song is about, but they do not necessarily have the physical skills to express it properly. Nowadays pure beautiful voice does not suffice and too often the singing students have to learn by themselves how to express themselves physically. In my experience concrete instructions on the expressions have helped the singers. So in this Thesis I concentrate on the posture, gesture and breathing and hopefully it will help some students to improve their physical expression. I am also presenting Susana Blochs method, Alba Emoting, which has inspired my studies.
By working on this Bachelor’s Thesis I have come across with new methods and I have been able to use them in my own work as a director. I have learnt how to pick up details in the performers movement and all in all I have learnt new aspects to think about in my directing.
