Tiivistelmä
Tässä opinnäytetyössä selvitettiin, miten yksityisen elinkeinonharjoittajan nykyistä kenneltoimintaa voidaan oikeilla valinnoilla ja liiketoiminnan tarkastelulla kehittää kohti taloudellista tuottoa. Kenneltoiminnan taloudellinen kehittäminen tehdään uhraamatta elinkeinonharjoittajan jalostuslaadullisia tavoitteita ja eettisiä arvoja. Erityisesti keskityttiin tutkimaan kustannusten muodostumista ja kyseiseen toimialaan sekä laajuuteen liittyviä tärkeitä valintoja, joita kehittämällä liiketoiminnan taloudellinen tuotto mahdollistettaisiin. Työn toimeksiantaja harjoittaa pienimuotoiseksi laskettavaa kenneltoimintaa sivutoimisena.
This thesis studied how a private kennel entrepreneur could develop their current business towards improved profitability by making specific business choices and activity reviews. The economic development of the kennel is carried out without sacrificing the breeding quality goals and the ethical values of the entrepreneur. The thesis focused on studying the cost formation and the important choices specific to the industry and the operational scope in order to develop the business towards improved profitability. The private entrepreneur in question works as a part-time dog breeder.
The goal of this research was to provide the entrepreneur with new tools and methods for independent monitoring and administration and cost-efficient development of the kennel business. The developed methods and tools allow the entrepreneur to observe the profit margin development already during the accounting period and not only at the end of the period when the external accountant completes the annual financial statements.
The thesis comprises of a theoretical part and a research part. The theoretical part is structured as a comprehensive entrepreneur’s guide for the basics of business administration in dog breeding. The research part presents a case study with both quantitative and qualitative elements. In addition to surveying relevant literature, the case study involves a thematic interview of the entrepreneur and a review of the kennel’s accounting records from previous years. Based on the study, clearly structured and easy-to-use spreadsheets are developed to the entrepreneur. By using the developed
spreadsheets and the guidelines provided in the theoretical part the entrepreneur is able to broadly but conveniently monitor the expenditure to income ratio.
The development part of the work was limited as expected, and the development of activities in a business of this size does not correspond to the development of activities in the context of larger companies. However, considering the industry and the scope, small but effective ways to make the business more efficient and easier to monitor were found. As a whole, this thesis functions both as a business guide and as a methodical tool for the management and development of the business for a dog breeder entrepreneur. The thesis is not limited only to the case of the entrepreneur in question, but the results generalize broadly to serve also other similar entrepreneurs in the dog breeding industry.
