I lärdomsprovet användes kvalitativ datainsamlingsmetod.
Terror attacks in India occur because India and Pakistan have difficulties to decide to whom the Jammu & Kashmir area should belong. Before the attack on 26 November 2008, seven attacks had already taken place in Mumbai. The attack in November 2008 started as terrorists came by boat to Mumbai and then attacked the CST railway station, the Leopold Café & Bar, the Nariman House and the Taj Mahal and Oberoi Trident hotels. The terror organisation Lashkar e Taiba was behind the attack resulting in the deaths of 165 people, 26 of which were foreigners.
The objective of this thesis was to find out how the terror attack of 26 November 2008 affected tourism in Mumbai. The study deals only with the effects on Mumbai. The method used in the thesis is the qualitative research method. The thesis is a case study including an interview with the managing director of a travel arranger company as well as news articles. The thesis writing process started in December 2009 and finished in May 2010. The interview took place on 14 April 2010.
The result shows that immediately after the attack, hotel cancellations were implemented and the occupancy rate of hotels was very low during the year of 2008. Tourists did not arrive as usual during the season from December 2008 to March 2009. The bookings that had been made for Christmas and New Year 2008 were affected. Taxi drivers and photographers started to arrange terror tours for tourists. The attack affected the economy and the non Muslim religions more than the tourism business. Although tourism did suffer to some extent, tourists are now arriving almost as usual, even though they are a little wary. The hotels have been restored.
After the attack the security has increased and all Indian citizens have identity cards now. The surveillance agencies hold daily meetings and the coordination between agen-cies has improved. The Mumbai Police have increased its budget and number of weap-ons and vehicles. Also the Sea Guard forces will be reinforced. However, terror attacks still continue and terrorism remains a threat and a reality in India.
