Tiivistelmä
Suomessa hirttä on käytetty perinteisesti pientalojen, kesämökkien ja kyläkoulujen rakennusmateriaalina. Julkisrakentaminen hirrestä ei kuitenkaan ole yleistynyt. Kiinnostus puurakentamista kohtaan on viime vuosina kasvanut.
Nykyteollisuuden valmistama hirsi soveltuu monimuotoisten julkisten rakennusten rakennusmateriaaliksi. Armas on ensimmäinen hirsirakenteinen hoivakoti Suomessa.
Traditionally wood and especially logs have been used in Finland when building family housing, summer cottages and village schools. Despite of the rising interest towards using wood and logs also in public buildings the practice has not yet become more common partially because of the construction rules and regulations were up to now rather restricting. However the construction regulations have now been lightened and the use of wood in modern design has been given greater expectations. The aim of this thesis is to find out which factors effect the use of wooden materials both in building and interior design and how the use of wood and the products processed from it could be promoted in public building.
The method used was that of the qualitive one and the material was gathered in March 2019 by using theme interviews. Four persons representing four different organisations were interviewed. The theorethical framework in the interviews was based in the qualifications of innovative diffusion theory that is in relative benefit, compatibility, complexity, testability and transparency. The gathered material was analysed by using content analyses.
The modern wood processing provides excellent material to be used in various construction purposes for public buildings. The Care home Armas is the very first modern senior house built in logs in Finland. According to the results environmental impacts when using wood and logs are minimal and furthermore the buildings last longer. Positive impacts can be observed also in health and well being of the habitants of the house. In short, wood materials were experienced as secure, healthy and long-lived solutions. The key in promoting wood use in construction is to invest in knowledge and new innovations. The industry needs high-quality references and collaboration between different sectors of developers, scientist and industry. On the bases of this thesis wider scopes in the possibilities of modern ”log building” can be clearly seen.
