Tiivistelmä
The aim of this thesis is to find out how International Business (IB) students and graduates are placed on the Finnish labour market. Students’ expectations and graduates actual placement are discussed and compared. Another main goal of the research is to find out what kinds of skills, competences and qualifications students and graduates receive from their IB studies and whether these answer the need of the working life. Interviewees were also asked to evaluate their IB study program.
The theoretical background is divided into two parts. The first part presents information regarding the labour market and the second part includes information about universities of applied sciences and the IB degree’s competence objectives. The background aims at presenting the demand and supply sides; the labour market as the demand and in this case the IB study program as the supply part. With the theoretical background in mind the research part of the thesis includes several themes that are presented and discussed later on.
The chosen research method is a qualitative method. Because the results will consist of interviewees’ feelings, attitudes and opinions, this research method was suitable. The interviewed students’ are graduating in maximum one year’s time and the graduates’ have graduated maximum one year ago. The reason for choosing this kind of sample was that students and graduates still have fresh views about their studies as well as their experiences on the labour market.
The overall results can be described as extremely positive as all interviewees were employed with majority employed in jobs that were relevant to their IB studies. This indicates that IB degree is in fact a current degree that prepares its students with consideration towards the expectations of the labour market.
