Sammandrag:
Abstract:
The aim of this study was to investigate job satisfaction and the factors affecting job satisfaction among Tallink Silja Oy's restaurant staff. Another aim was to find out how the supervisor’s influence and organizational skills impact on employee’s motivation. Salary and other rewards have proved to be important to employee’s motivation in previous research. Also other factors like recognition and personal development have been important.
The theory part of this thesis consists of four parts: Work atmosphere, motivation, motivation factors and organization and leadership. On basis of the theory part a qualitative study was made in the form of interviews. The interviewees consisted of nine waiters, five of which were permanent and four temporary employees. The interviews were conducted onboard during the interviewee’s free time with the exception of an interview that was conducted in a cafe.
The results of the survey showed that motivational factors like salary, feedback, development and co-workers were all significant for the staff to various degrees. Security of employment was also a significant factor. Colleagues' influence was especially important. The general opinion was that the working atmosphere was quite good. Supervisor's organizational skills were also important for the interviewees. Practical things to ensure that staff has the resources and tools they need was significant.
Also how the supervisor conduct the daily work was important to the employees.
To further motivate its staff, the employer could consider how to best motivate each individual. More responsibilities at work and frequent feedback to those who need it would motivate these people further. Social events for staff on their time off would also be a factor for motivation and job satisfaction.
