Työn suorituspaikka on kirjoittamisen aikaan pääkaupunkiseutu.
This thesis is a portfolio-like diary-style thesis that aims to document the day-to-day work of a data center operator in an IT company. The purpose of this thesis was to provide a clear picture of what the data center operator's workdays and tasks consist of. At the time of writing, the place of work was the Helsinki metropolitan area.
The length of the diary tracking is ten weeks, during which daily goals and events are described. At the end of each week there is also a weekly analysis that briefly discusses the events of the past week and goes into more detail about the most important issues of the week. Due to the nondisclosure agreement, the thesis describes issues at a rather general level, rather than focusing on technical details.
During the tracking, the importance of communication and documentation was particularly emphasized. All the work and changes always had to be documented in some way in order to make it easier to address possible problems or changes in the future. The importance of communication was noticeable both when planning different projects and during the work itself. Sharing information as much as possible contributed to the smoothness of everyone's work. In the author’s work, it also helped to avoid, for example, situations where the connections of a device would be left incomplete due to lack of information.
During the tracking period, considerable progress was made especially in telecommunication related work, for example, in various configuration tasks. Also, the installations and fixing connections of various devices became slightly faster and more reliable during the tracking. Working with more experienced employees in both above-mentioned jobs was particularly educational. Studying independently also helped in self-development.
