This report is a written contribution to the development project of my Applying Arts studies at Turku University of Applied Sciences. Pyhäjärviset was produced in the spring of 2017 and the performance was premiered at the Pyhäjärvi Full Moon Dance Festival in July 2017. The theme of the festival was “a Good life”. At the request of the artistic director of the Full Moon Dance festival Kirsi Törmi I created a project based on the Pyhäjärvi municipality. The project was carried out in workshops during the spring.
The group working in the workshops consisted of dance enthusiasts of different ages from the Pyhäjärvi region. During the spring of 2017, we met with the group once a month and we narrowed down the subject matter of the participants' personal history, the skills of expression and prepared the material for the future presentation.
The purpose of the workshops was to find the potentian resources of the participants to support their well-being, to recognize the importance of the personal life cycle for their own development, and to develop new ways for the group to face future challenges through art. Workshops used movement improvisation, expressional drama based exercises, and the TRE method.
The age range of the group was 14-69 years. Each participant had a personal relationship with dance. The personal life stories from the everyday life of the participants were at the heart of the presentation. The stories were discovered in the workshops. The theme of the work was strongly related to the depopulation of the village and the reduction of the opportunities in action. Pyhäjärviset project was presented in the center of Pyhäsalmi in the former R-kiosk's empty shop two times during the Full Moon Dance Festival in July 2017 and it gathered together 168 viewers.
Workshops and the performance achieved their social inclusion goals. The group felt that the episode was empowering and created a stronger feeling of their roots. The performance attracted a lot of interest in the audience. At the same time, the final performance involved the story of each participant and the importance of the village for the participants. Each performer had a solo scene in the performance that depicted their stories.
