The client of the thesis was Company Ltd. whose client site documentation process was to be developed due to undocumented client equipment and an increased documentation backlog. The thesis starts with describing he current documentation process and the possible problems within it The root cause of the problems was identified by examining the current operating model and analyzing the significance of each step taken within the current documentation process and the customer value that was returned by each step.
The theory is based on the lean concept and the current process was examined on the basis of flow efficiency and customer value. After examining the current process, a process diagram drawing was created showing each step made in the process. The steps shown in the diagram were then organized in to three different categories according to the value they produced to the customer. The categories were value creating, auxiliary, and wasted actions which adhere to the ideas presented in lean thinking.
The thesis was able to demonstrate that there were unnecessary actions in the process from the customer value point of view and that the client site documentation process could be streamlined by removing unnecessary actions from the process and expanding the skills of the employees. A new documentation process proposal was created, as well as a new process diagram showing the benefits of the new process over the old one. The benefits of the new process were also illustrated with a value chart, which showed that expanding the knowledge of existing workers could reduce the number of steps taken in the process by more than half while increasing the share of customer value generating actions by almost a quarter. The introduction of the new process and further development were excluded from the thesis.
