Tiivistelmä
Metsien ja soiden hyödyntäminen ihmisen käyttöön on muuttanut niiden luontoa merkittävästi ja vaikuttanut haitallisesti luonnon monimuotoisuuteen. Elinympäristöjen ennallistaminen on tärkeä keino monimuotoisuuskadon torjunnassa. Monimuotoisuutta parantaa muun muassa puuston heterogeenisyys ja se on tärkeä ennallistamisen tavoite etenkin talousmetsiä ennallistettaessa lahopuun lisäämisen ohella. Soiden ennallistamisessa painopiste on suon vesitalouden palauttamisessa, mutta ennallistamistoimenpiteillä vaikutetaan myös soilla puuston monipuolisuuteen. Soiden ennallistamisessa päätavoite on nostaa vedenpinta ennen ojitusta vallinneelle tasolle.
Man has exploited forests and mires for his own use and thus significantly altered their nature. This has had a negative impact on biodiversity. Habitat restoration is an important tool when combating biodiversity loss. Heterogeneous tree stands improve diversity, and heterogeneity is an important target of restoration along with increasing rotten tree, especially when restoring commercial forests. In mires restoration focuses on water management, but restoration also affects the diversity of mires. The main objective is to raise the water level to the pre-drainage level. Sphagnum moss populations often develop rapidly after the restoration of the mire, as they benefit greatly from rising water levels. The increase in the coverage of Sphagnum moss on the restored mire is a good indicator of the start and progress of restoration.
This study dealt with mires that were restored ten years ago in Repovesi National Park and in Aarnikotka Nature Conservation Area. The objective of the thesis was to investigate the heterogeneity of tree stands in mires in terms of basal area, volume and number of trees. The spreading of Sphagnum moss, restocking and factors affecting them were also studied. The fieldwork to collect the thesis data took place in the autumn 2018. The inventory was done in accordance with the Habitat Inventory Instructions by Metsähallitus. The coverage of Sphagnum moss was estimated on experimental plots by visual observation.
The tree stands in restoration areas varied in terms of basal area, volume and number of trees in most of the compartments reviewed. The restocking was abundant in all compartments and the richer the sites were and the closer to the ditch line the experimental plots were, the more seedlings there were. The richness of the site also affected the increase in Sphagnum moss coverage, as well as the closeness to the ditch line. Against all expectations, correlation between the coverage of Sphagnum moss and the restocking did not come up in this study, although peat moss is generally considered to be a good breeding ground.
In addition to research subjects above, one further aim was to raise awareness about restoration among visitors in Repovesi National Park. This was done by social media. Photographs of various aspects of the restoration with brief info texts were published on Repovesi Facebook website during the autumn 2018.
