Tiivistelmä
In this thesis the main focus was on researching leadership in a Namibian congregation and the goal was to find out how the leadership is viewed and experienced. The thesis provides theoretical aspects on leadership in a congregation; what is needed, how it differs from corporative world and what are the biggest challenges. Based on the theory and on the survey findings recommendations were given to the case congregation to help them to improve and grow.
The research was conducted by handing out four different open-ended questionnaires to different groups who are or have been involved with the leadership of Emmanuel. Total of 62 people, answered the survey. In addition four leaders were interviewed.
The main questions of this study were ”What type of leadership is needed in a congregation?” and “What are the challenges in leading a Namibian congregation?”. Leadership in a congregation is worldwide topic, thus, the aim was to provide a research and framework that can be used globally in congregations and not only limited to the Namibian case study. To provide better understanding of leadership in a congregation an additional survey was made to leaders in different congregations. Total of 15 people from different congregations from 5 different countries answered the survey providing a better insight to the topic.
The results indicated that all the groups (leaders, volunteers, employees and previous employees) have similar views of the leadership. However, there were differences depending on the persons’ personal experiences and relationship with the leadership and how many years they are or were part of the church. The current challenges at Emmanuel were recognised by all the groups; all the groups believed there is an urgent need to improve communication.
