Salonkivaunun keittiötila on suljettu yleisöltä.
This thesis examines the interior of Mannerheim’s saloon carriage kitchen. The study aims to find out, what the kitchen interior was like, when Mannerheim was using the carriage. The study also aims to determine whether there is any reason to restore the kitchen to its former condition. The saloon carriage was used by Commander-in-Chief of the National Defence Forces Marshal Mannerheim when Finland was in war between 1939–1944. After the war Mannerheim used the saloon carriage when he was the President of Finland until 1946. More than 40 years later, when the saloon carriage was no longer needed in railway use, the City of Mikkeli became interested in taking it into museum use. The saloon carriage is now at Mikkeli’s railway station yard and it is open to the public annually on 4 June. The kitchen is not available to the public.
An analysis of the museum object relevance of the saloon carriage kitchen was conducted, explaining the importance of the kitchen in terms of the whole saloon carriage. The history of Mannerheim and the saloon carriage were used as a basis for the analysis. The analysis provided a basis for reflecting, what grounds there are for restoring the kitchen.
The thesis is a qualitative study using history and case study research methods. The research material was collected by observation, through interviews and email correspondence. Material was also collected from literature, documents, old photographs, films and audio recordings.
As a result of the study, it can be said that there is not one correct answer to what layers of time should be conserved. How to define the value of different eras? Every era leaves their own marks on a space. It needs careful consideration whether to remove newer or older layers. Something that is once removed cannot be restored authentically.
