The purpose of this thesis was to find out the wishes of cancer patients regarding the treatment environment of the drug treatment clinic. There was also investigated whether the duration of cancer treatment affects the patient's need for privacy or sociality. The subject of the research was work-life oriented. The research was created for planning the future changes at the oncologic outpatient clinic of Turku University Hospital.
Katie Eriksson’s caritative caring theory was chosen as the reference framework for the research and it guided the information retrieval and reflection of the results. The survey was done with an anonymous questionnaire which patients filled out during the cancer treatment.
90 questionnaires were given to patients and the response rate was 100%. The questionnaires were reviewed one by one and the answers were summarized. The results of multiple-choice questions were exported to Excel-program. The result tables were created and percentages calculated with Excel. The open-ended questions were analyzed separately.
The results of the research highlighted the appreciation of the social care environment. 57% of all respondents preferred to be in a treatment room with several other patients. The need for privacy increased in a group of patients whose treatment had lasted for more than 18 months and also in the group of those who had had treatment for 0-3 months. There also came up a wish to have a more private conversation with a nurse. The preferred place to be during the treatment was a bed. Patients wished for an opportunity to have a snack during the treatment. Favourite activities during the treatment were watching television and listening to music or audiobooks.
