Patients’ Experiences of Day Surgery

Day surgery is of great advantage to the healthcare system and the community at large as more patients can be treated effectively and efficiently. Although, it took some time for the practice to be integrated in the healthcare system, nowadays the concept of day surgical practice has been globally accepted as a high-quality procedure.
The aim of this study was to understand the experiences of patients in day surgical care through existing literatures. The purpose was to find ways to improve the outcome of patients' day surgical care. The study was conducted as a literature review and data was collected using two databases namely: CINAHL and PubMed. Results from fifteen articles were analyzed using inductive content analysis method. The results show three main themes: patients’ physical experiences in day surgery, patients’ psychological experiences in day surgery and healthcare system aspect in day surgery and six sub themes namely; pain, post-anesthesia nausea and vomiting, effects of anxiety and discomfort on daily life, time and waiting, nursing interventions, education and access to information provision.
