The purpose of this thesis was to create a manual for Neste Naantali refinery’s burner maintenance. It was made to clarify and standardize the maintenance work. The manual is used as a mechanics tool, as well as an introduction tool for new employees. This maintenance manual is based on the author’s own experience as a burner mechanic, complemented with information gathered from more experienced colleagues and materials provided by the burner manufacturers (mostly blueprints).
The operational principle of all the furnaces included in this manual is the same. Gas burners are used to heat the material that runs in the tubes inside the furnace. The burners are located on the bottom or the sides of the furnaces. The pilot burner ignites the main burner, which heats the material inside the tubes. The temperature of the furnace is controlled by adjusting the draft of the furnace, and the amount air and gas fed to the burners.
This manual was made in co-operation with the rest of the burner maintenance team to find the best available methods. This work was made challenging by the fact that the burners cannot be taken out of the furnaces at any given time for closer inspection. This could only be done when maintenance on the burners was needed. During this time, I had to take photographs and notes, without compromising the quality of work and prolonging the time of the maintenance.
Most often the main burner maintenance is planned so that the process unit is not in production. This way there is no production losses due to main burners being out of action. Obviously, this is not always possible. Therefore, the maintenance work done on burners in a running process unit must be done quickly. Pilot burners do not affect the heating power of the furnace, so they can be taken out at any time.
