Tiivistelmä
Toimintaterapeutteja työskentelee yhä enemmän lastensuojelussa perhetyössä ja sijaishuollossa. Suhteutettuna edellä mainittuihin kenttiin ammatillinen tukihenkilötyö on kokonaisuutta tarkastellen pienimuotoinen osa lastensuojelutyötä. Toimintaterapeutteja työskentelee vähän ammatillisina tukihenkilöinä verratessa muihin ammattiryhmiin.
Haastattelututkimuksen tarkoituksena on kasvattaa tietoisuutta toimintaterapeuttien mahdollisuuksista työskennellä pienessä ammattiryhmässä, jossa pääsääntöisesti työskentelee sosiaalihuollon ammattilaisia. Tavoitteena on kuvata toimintaterapeutin roolia sosiaalihuollon kentälle painottuvassa lastensuojelutyössä, erityisesti ammatillisen tukihenkilötyön osalta tarkasteltuna.
An increasing number of occupational therapists work in family work and foster care in child welfare services. Relative to the extent of these fields, professional support personnel’s work is a small part of child welfare work. The number of occupational therapists as professional support personnel is relatively small compared to other professions.
The purpose of the interview study of the thesis was to increase awareness of occupational therapists’ work opportunities in small professional groups consisting mainly of social work professionals. The main goal was to describe occupational therapists' role in the field of social work from the professional support personnel’s special perspective.
The interview study had a qualitative research approach, and theme interviews were used for collecting the data. Four occupational therapists participated in the interviews. The participants worked in public services and private companies around Finland. All of them had work experience with psychiatric work with children or adolescents.
The data was analysed by using theory driven content analysis. According to the main results, competence as a professional support person, challenges of multi-professional cooperation and the role of occupational therapists in child welfare services. The interviewees highlighted neuropsychiatric and psychiatric disorders and parenthood challenges in their clients' everyday performance. Occupational therapists were seen advocates who speak on behalf of the clients' function. Using a wide range of methods, occupational therapists can influence their clients' challenges in their everyday life.
Further research could examine the clients’ experiences with occupational therapists who work as professional support persons.
