Siksi opinnäytteeni eteneekin pikkuhiljaa teoreettisesta pohdinnasta kohti konkreettisia havaintoja dokumentaarisen elokuvan leikkausprosessista. Havaintoni pohjautuvat haastatteluille, jotka tein elokuvien Sielunmetsä (2017, ohj. Anu Kuivalainen, leik. Tuula Mehtonen) ja Ei koskaan enää (2018, ohj. Aino Suni, leik.
The relationship between a documentary movie and the real world is a topic that has been debated on since the early days of cinema. Indeed, the topic is an important one for the whole artform since a movie’s relationship to the real world is in the key role when drawing a line between a fictional film and a documentary. Moreover, there exists an ethical aspect to the topic. If the audience assumes that a documentary movie is truthful, they might also expect it to have informational value. Therefore documentary movies simultaneously hold a promise of a truthful story and a risk of disinformation.
This thesis is a result of me diving into this classic topic. My point of view is not completely theoretical. From the beginning of my research the goal has been to find out how to edit documentaries in a way that they are respectful to the real world. For this reason, my thesis progresses from theoretical considerations towards concrete observations about the editing process. The observations are based on interviews I conducted with the directors and editors of two Finnish documentary films, Into The Forest I Go (2017, dir. Anu Kuivalainen, ed. Tuula Mehtonen) and Never Again (2018, dir. Aino Suni, ed. Jussi Sandhu).
I conclude by giving five pieces of advice to editors of documentary movies. 1) Co-operate and recognize both your strengths and weaknesses, 2) Honor the opinions of the people in your movie, 3) Decide which part you will portray of your characters, 4) Focus on the core ideas, don’t worry too much about the details, and 5) Associate freely. I don’t expect these pieces of advice to be universal but I do hope that they can expand the “mental toolbox” of documentary editors.
