In January 2018, the European Commission published a new plastic strategy for meeting the demands and challenges within plastics usage and recovery. The new strategy aims to enhance the recycling of plas-tics and promote packaging recycling, so that by the year 2030 every plastic packaging will completely be recycled. Especially the field of food packaging is challenging because of its restrictions and regulations and there is a growing need for appropriate packages.
The theoretical part of the thesis examined the points of the EU plas-tics strategy related to food packaging. In addition, the theory section determined and discussed the topic in general and the regulations re-quired within packaging. The research part was based on the material collected through the theme interview and the results analyzed from it.
According to the results of the study, it became evident, that there is no single solution to the worldwide plastic problem, but solutions need to be put together from a variety of options into one larger enti-ty. Moreover, a functioning plastics circular economy requires cross-industry cooperation and open debates on the subject.
