The objective of the thesis was to investigate what the current state of the cooperation between Kymenlaakso Social and Health Care Services joint municipal authority emergency care and the NH90 helicopter crew of Utti Jaeger Regiment is and how it could be improved. The aim was to develop and standardize the know-how of the personnel of emergency medical services when cooperating with the NH90 helicopter by producing a PowerPoint material and a checklist for the use of the paramedics. The material can be used for training events and when attending emergency care missions.
A practice-based thesis is based on the needs of the commissioner and helps to develop practical activities. This thesis consists of the report of the planning and the research process together with the final product. The data was collected by using a qualitative research method: semi-structured interview. The interviews were held either with one interviewee or in a small group.
The participants of the interview were a sampling of the NH90 helicopter emergency crew and an experienced group of paramedics from Kymenlaakso Social and Health Care Services joint municipal authority emergency care that have taken part in helicopter performed search and rescue missions. The collected material was transcribed into a text format and an inductive content analysis was made. The themes which were used when drawing up the PowerPoint material and checklist were chosen based on the study. The final product has been classified to the level IV restricted and it has been delivered only to the commissioner of this thesis and to the Finnish Defence Forces.
The study brought forth shortcomings and challenges in the cooperation and development
proposals given to them by the experts. The shortcomings have been partly known also beforehand but now they were comprised to a more perceivable and processable entirety.
Because of the worldwide rareness of this kind of interagency cooperation, this study also
increased the understanding about the possibilities and challenges of the cooperation between social and health care agencies and security agencies. This thesis increases information about the cooperation between emergency medical services and different public authorities and it lays a foundation for deeper research especially on cooperation between emergency medical services and the Finnish Defence Forces.
