Tiivistelmä
Hoitotyössä potilas on kaiken toiminnan lähtökohta.
In healthcare the patient is the key player. In general, the patients are extremely content with their care, finding the experience to be professional, excellent, secure and reliable. Information about patient experience is often obtained by collecting feedback through various surveys. These surveys usually consist of feedback regarding the care and procedure, the treatment and behavior of the staff, and how readily they feel the access to information is. Previous studies on Finnish pregnant women found that they do not want to feel rushed, that they expect encountering, accurate and precise information and the possibility to participate in the decision-making process.
This thesis was commissioned by the Department of Obstetrics and Gyneacology at the Turku University Hospital to address the Maternity Outpatient Clinics´ patient experience through patient feedback. The goals were finding places of improvement for the staff, enhancing the quality of care and increasing the overall satisfaction patients have with the care they receive. To address this, we analyzed the feedback that was given. The approach of this study was a questionnaire and the format of the questionnaire was a text message enquiry. In total, we had 217 patients respond from the open feedback section and they had been given in the year 2019.
We found that in general the patient were extremely content with the quality of care. 64 % of the feedback given was about interaction. While the positive feedback was focused on the staff for their ability to interact in addition the care received, the most common complaint was that the patient felt they had not been heard or had not been given enough information about their situation. As an area of improvement, the patients suggested that the professionals would make more of an effort to inform them about what they are doing and what risks are involved with any procedure. This was further compounded with a request for clearer instructions and better guidance. There were only a small proportion of patients that responded in Swedish, but in nearly all cases there was a request for improvement in the Swedish speaking skills from the staff.
This study shows the importance of questionnaires to get feedback from patients, and allows those in medical care facilities to understand what they are doing well, and which areas need improvement to enhance the patient experience.
