Tiivistelmä
Lihastauteja on erilaisia.
There are different types of muscular dystrophies. They can constitute entirely of muscle origin or as joint disorders of the nervous system and skeletal muscles. Though there is no cure for a muscular dystrophy disorder, it is extremely important to ensure and maintain one’s functional ability. HMSN stands for Hereditary motor sensory neuropathy. It is also known as Charcot- Marie- Tooth- disease, CMT. HMSN is a hereditary, peripherial nervous system disorder and has many subcategories. HMSN causes degeneration of the peripherial nerves and causes muscular atrophy, weakness and loss of sensation in the extremities. Deformities of the hands and feet are considered as common symptoms. Poor balance and difficulties during walking are also linked to the disorder. The subcategories of the HMSN- disorder between family members can vary, though the description of the symptoms is very similar in all subcategories.
The goal of this functional thesis was to create an exercise guide for a person with HMSN to enable self- training while supporting one’s functional ability. This guide will also serve the professionals working with HMSN and rehabilitation because it provides information about the disorder and of its complexity and challenges. For the purpose of this thesis research data has been collected from various sources and priceless information was received about the locomotion of a person with HMSN while spending time with them.
The exercises of the self- practise guide have been tested by people with HMSN and therefore found to be suitable for to be used by the target group. As a result of this thesis process became a comprehensive knowledge base about HMSN and a guide for self- exercise for people with HMSN. A development idea resulting by this thesis could be a practise guide focusing on the exercise of the upper limbs. Based on our observations and the comments given by the people with HMSN we believe that an exercise guide such as this would benefit the overall self- exercise of a person with HMSN. To limit the content of our guide the exercises for the upper limbs were excluded in the beginning. For further development of this guide could be to examine whether the exercises have a beneficial influence on the functional ability of a person with HMSN.
