Filmfotografen som frilans : Vilka faktorer påverkar filmfotografens möjligheter att eta- blera sig inom filmbranschen?

Abstract

Syftet med uppsatsen är att utreda vilka faktorer som påverkar filmfotografens möjligheter att etablera sig inom filmbranschen. Uppsatsen utreder om det är utbildning, kontakter, erfarenhet, sociala egenskaper eller marknadsföring som väger mest då en filmfotograf ger sig ut i arbetslivet som frilans. Jag har iakttagit filmbranschens utveckling och sett på konkurrensen på arbetsmarknaden. Mitt examensarbete är främst riktat till filmfotografer och studerande inom branschen. Undersökningen är kvalitativ, fyra etablerade filmfotografer mellan 30 och 40 år gamla har intervjuats. Filmfotograferna har varierande utbildning och inlett sin karriär på 2000-talet. Jag har bandat mina intervjuer och låtit diskussionen löpa öppet för att få en djupare insyn i ämnet. Mina intervjuobjekt har varit noggrant utvalda för att få den mest täckande och relevanta informationen om situationen i filmbranschen. Jag har fokuserat på filmfotografer som är aktiva inom dramaproduktioner eller reklamfilm och uteslutit fotografer verksamma inom flerkame-raproduktioner för TV och stillbildsfotografer. Jag har stött analysen med litteratur samt artiklar, forskningar och statistik jag hämtat från Internet. I fråga om utbildning uppskattade de respondenter som hade magisterexamen i filmkonst sin utbildning, fastän de inte ansåg den som en förutsättning för att klara sig. Utbildningen hade gett kunskap och självförtroende, men mera väsentligt var kontakter, där regissörskontakten visade sig vara den viktigaste. Förståelse och finkänslighet för bildberättande, en personlig stil och ett bidragande till produktionen är viktigt, samt att vara hängiven sitt arbete. Att kunna kommunicera med olika människor, samarbeta och leda sitt team är ett måste. Marknadsföring och portfolio underlättar i början av karriären. Alla faktorer påverkar allt i ett teamarbete. Intressant var att tur ansågs vara en av de mest avgörande faktorer- na.

The purpose of the examination thesis is to investigate the factors that affect the cinematographer’s opportunities to establish himself in the film industry. The paper investigates whether it is education, contacts, experience, social characteristics or marketing that is the most important capacity for a freelancer. I have studied the development in the film industry and looked at the competition in the labor market. My thesis is primarily targeted to cinematographers and students in the field. The study is qualitative, four established cinematographers between 30 and 40 years old were interviewed. The cinematographers have varying education and started their careers in the 2000s. I have taped my interviews and let the discussion run open to get a deeper insight into the subject. The respondents have been carefully selected to get the most comprehensive and relevant information about the situation in the film industry. I have focused on cinematographers who are active within feature films or commercials and excluded the photographers involved in multi-camera productions for television and still photography. I have supported the analysis with literature and articles, suveys and statistics I have found on the Internet. In terms of education the respondents who had Masters degree in cinematography appreciated their education, although they did not regard it as a precondition for success. Education had given knowledge and confidence, but more important where connections. The contact with the director turned out to be the most important. Comprehension and sensitivity for visual narrative, a personal style and contributing to the production is important, and to be devoted to the work. Being able to communicate with various people, collaborate and lead a team is a prerequisite. Marketing and showreel supports the career. All factors, affects everything in a team work. Interesting was that luck was considered one of the most crucial factors.
