Dessutom diskuteras deras existens i verkligheten. The majority of goods in world trade are transported by sea. Due to financial and geo-graphical reasons the container ships carrying goods call port only at major ports. These ports are called hubs and they offer transportation services to several ports around the world, as well to their respective regions. The aim of the study is to explain the theories, called Hub and Spoke, behind the complex hub networks. Furthermore, their existence in real life will be discussed. Four major European ports will be presented and their prices and transit times to 30 selected destinations will be examined and compared. The results will benefit the study’s principal. The theoretical part of this paper is a literature study of various academic articles. The empirical analysis is conducted with qualitative methods. The qualitative data examined is primary data, collected from the different hubs. The analysis shows that there are differences in prices, transit times and destinations offered by the different hubs. In addition, the analysis verifies that Hub and Spoke theories are applied in real life. However, predictions made by the writers of the articles of the theo-ries, are not necessarily correct. The shipping industry and the world trade will be af-fected by the emerging economies and investments in new technologies.
