The responsibility for health promotion activities is shared between the society, organization, and employee. There are a number of options for workplaces on how to support the working capacity and health of their employees. One of these is to transform the work environment into a one that maintains the health and working capacity of employees and supports healthy choices. Employees are responsible for complying with the culture, rules, and guidelines of the workplace, as well as for taking care of their own working capacity and health.
There are several public health challenges in Finland that affect the people of working age. The biggest one among the working age population is a bad lifestyle behavior that causes e.g. obesity, which increases the number of early retirements and the costs of occupational health services, as well as affects the overall coping at work. In addition, it increases the risk of different diseases, the most probable ones being musculoskeletal disorders, type 2 diabetes, heart diseases, and mental health problems.
This development project was initially part of a Turku AMK Oy initiative concerning wellbeing at work, but the initiative ended before the development project was fully launched. Consequently, the development project was carried on as an individual project that was designed to support and maintain the wellbeing of the Turku AMK Oy employees at work. At first the emphasis of the project was on the development of a body composition meter, but as the project proceeded, the focus broadened to a development of a health point. Furthermore, the purpose of the project changed from improving wellbeing at work to preventing and maintaining working capacity and the health of the personnel.
The basis for this development project was descriptive literature that aimed at increasing the reliability of the body composition meter reference values and instructions. The scientific data from the descriptive literature was put to use in the development of the health point in order to develop self-monitoring services and to increase the availability and attractiveness of the point. During the development project, a new health point was established in the old premises. However, in the final hours of the project the health point was moved to new premises. This is why the health point could not be opened to the employees of Turku AMK Oy during the development project, but instead was opened only after the project had already ended.
